Planning - Considering Mise-en-Scene For Your Opening

The use of Mise-en-Scene is very important for our opening of the film. It is the first part of footage the audience will be viewing therefore, we will be wanting it to create a good impression of what the rest of the film could be like.





We imagine the main character "Rosie" to be dressed in dark
clothing to convey imagery of darkness and desolation. Due to Rosie being a young child she will not be wearing any makeup. This could be to portray her innocence and purity before all the bad events begin to occur throughout the film. 





For the other characters in the film we would like them to be dressed in more happy/light coloured clothing to suggest how their lives are good in the orphanage compared to Rosie's. We want the girls to also look quite doll like as late on in the film it would help show how they are slowly being controlled by the dolls made by emily. Their clothing choice can be anything they think is suitable for the given colour scheme and location however, if their costumes are not what we would like we will supply other clothing we would like them to wear. This could be a top/shoes/jumper/hair etc.



The props we will using are:

• A newspaper showing the tragic house fire that Rosie's parents were killed in. We will
  
  make this prop ourselves to make sure it shows the correct information within our plot but making sure it still looks realistic. 
• Old pictures of Rosie and her family together, this will portray the devastation of the tragedy and will also be included in the newspaper. 
• A dollhouse - this symbolises the control that Rosie never use to have in the Orphanage and also relates to the story of her mother being killed; the connection/memory she still has with her mother.
  
• Dolls will also be included in our film as connotations of dolls presents ideas of creepiness due to the sinister occurrence in previous horror films. They also represent the children of the orphanage and how Rosie will manipulate them into doing things she wants. 
• In one of the shots, a teddy bear will also be used. The typical connotation of comfort and security will be distinguished as we will be using it to show the isolation and fear of being left alone.
  

Lighting will mainly be the daylight we will have when filming however, if we can film on a day where it is quite dull and cloudy this will be really effective for our film as it helps create pathetic fallacy in the opening.
